Gum contouring

The balance between teeth and gums, as part of designing the smile.

What it is

The aesthetics of a smile depend not only on the teeth but also on the outline of the gums. Gum contouring reshapes the gums, aiming for more harmonious proportions between the teeth, the gums and the smile.

Who it is for

It can be considered where the gums cover a larger part of the teeth, or where their outline is uneven. Suitability and the extent of the intervention are decided after a clinical examination.

Approach

Depending on the case, contouring can be carried out with suitable surgical techniques or with a laser. The method is chosen according to the anatomy, the health of the gums and the aim of the treatment.

What it can offer

The gums, as part of the design.

  1. A more harmonious outline

Reshaping the gums can improve the balance and symmetry of the smile.

  2. Pronounced gum display

In suitable cases it can form part of the treatment of a “gummy smile”. The cause of the increased gum display has to be established before treatment.

  3. Combined with other treatments

Where indicated, gum contouring can be combined with whitening, composite or porcelain veneers, as part of an overall smile design.

  4. Individual design

Each case is assessed separately, so that the intervention suits the proportions of the teeth and the face.
